Looking for Summer School Words of Wisdom

I'm teaching summer school for the first time beginning on July 5th  for 4 weeks to rising 1st graders. I'm looking for words of wisdom from those of you who have taught it before. The kids arrive at school by 9am, get breakfast, have a reading lesson, guided reading groups, literacy centers, they have lunch and then math class. The kids go home by 1pm. Does anyone have words of wisdom or creative summer projects/themes for rising first graders?
Thanks!
Ms. Whyte

  1. I'm teaching a class called Jump Start to first grade! Sounds like it might be similar! I have a huge list of ideas that I want to incorporate but it probably wouldn't make much sense to you! I'll see if I can figure out how to make it so you can use it. In the mean time, check out my summer school pinterest board! http://pinterest.com/misskinder/summer-school-ideas/

  2. I am teaching summer school also. We are doing a lot of games and centers that are reinforcing what our students really need to remember for 1st Grade. We have worked on sentence structure, CVC words, sight words, money, addition, and subtraction. We are trying to make it as fun as possible to keep the kids interested!

  3. Way to go! Remember, summer school is more important than school because these students REALLY NEED YOU!!! I have the 3rd graders who failed the FCAT, so this is their second chance. You have to make it sooooo high interest so that they come everyday, but also a lot of things that they missed...for example I use the Daily Five to make sure my students get a lot of phonics and vocabulary! If you go to my blog, go to the bottom and click on Treasure Box, it is my reward and behavior system & it really works! Also, lots of stickers, snacks, motion, songs & computer time really helps with summer students! Good luck!

  4. Thank you ladies for your ideas! Thankfully one of my fellow kindergarten teachers is teaching summer school with me so I'm not alone and we're thinking about using some of our themes from the end of the year with the kids since we are teaching at another school.
We were given an outline for the 4 weeks but we don't necessarily have the books (of course) so we are adjusting. Week 1 we are going to teach a friendship theme, week 2 is non-fiction theme on Community Helpers, Week 3 we're going to do an author study on Rosemary Wells, and Week 4 will be a beach theme. Through all 4 weeks we will be teaching story elements and working on writing. Guided reading is a big part of our day and then in math we want them to have a solid understanding of numbers to 31 and basic addition skills. Well that's our plan....

Hadar I just signed up for pinterest and I'm excited to start bookmarking ideas as you have! I see you marked my end of the year bags :-)

    Thank you for sharing!!
